Creative Writing workshop in Mumbai

Creative Writing workshop by Manjushree Abhinav

On 27th and 28th September, 10:30 am to 5 pm.

Creative Writing is that writing in which the writer is more important than the reader. Come, discover the joy of writing.

Day 1 :

Everyone has a novel inside them, the huge storehouse of memories spiced with emotions. Accessing this storehouse to the pen is the first step in the unblocking of the writers block that most of us face. The healing property of art is in the ability to bring outside those buried treasure boxes. Writing gives us the opportunity to resolve those unanswered questions. Once we know what we can write, we will proceed to the craft of writing.

We will deal with two different approaches to fiction writing, the American conflict-resolution structure and our melo-dramatic Navrasas. Thus stretched in opposite directions , we will find a way to tell our story.

Day 2 :

Writing a short story to its completion will be the goal on this day. We will understand how to merge truths and lies together to weave an interesting structure. The only way to make a story memorable is to infuse it with rich characters. And finally, self editing is a tool no writer can do without. Transition, the writers final tool, the point where you realize that you have made a point and move on.

Fees : Rs. 1900/-

To register, please either write a mail to manjushree.abhinav@gmail.com with ur mobile no, or call 09825476446 and confirm your attendance.

Manjushree Abhinav is a novelist and a film maker. She has taught writing and film making at NID, FTII, Srishti, and Storygram. Contact her at manjushree.abhinav@gmail.com.

Online Writing Mentorship

Learn Creative Writing, Script Writing, Online!

I also mentor fiction writers.

This is my course flow. Usually, it takes two months of 3 hrs per week  to complete this syllabus, but we could condense it to two sessions of two hours a week and finish it in one month.

CREATIVE WRITING

Since we are dealing with fiction here, we would first tap the biggest reservoir of stories : an unblocked storehouse of memories and emotions. We will also understand the structure of the conflict-resolution story, and we shall dip into the Navarasas. The aim of the workshop is to dig out the blocks that hamper the sprouting of the creative juices and fuel the love of writing towards an intense and natural discipline. It will help the beginner as well as the writer who is stuck in the middle of a story, a script, a film

SCRIPTWRITING

The story we have structured in the creative writing workshop, we will stretch out into an audio visual        script. We will understand the elements of Scriptwriting: Characterization, Plot, Setting, Theme. We will then move on to finer aspects such as scene transitions and dialogues. Students will write short film scripts in the internationally accepted format of screenplay.

Antardhun : A weekly support group for creative practice

Antardhun : 12 weeks to discovering and recovering your artist within:

This is an invitation to those who miss the artist within themselves. And to those who are willing to commit to a process that will be fun along the way and which aims at recovering the creative flow.

The process has two aspects: 1. The Morning pages. and 2. The artist date.

Those who would like to join us on this twelve week programme, have to commit to both, the morning pages, the artist date, and a once a week meeting in which we give and get feedback from each other.

Morning pages, essentially, is a form of brain drain, in which you empty out the overactive mind. On a full scape notebook, get down three pages, in long hand. This writing is not meant for sharing, not even with yourself. It is basically a tool to get to the other side. The other side of your moods, your whining, your fears. Mostly, to the other side of the censor, the villain of the artist's life who doesn't let her be creative. Morning pages is a time tested therapy that can help you get over depression, long held grudges, fears, and so, naturally, the artists block. Although this process might be more attractive to writers, the morning pages are meant for anyone who wants to be her own shrink, heal herself, and get on with life anew.

The artist date: Most of us have an artist within, an undernourished child who has been forgotten to sing. The morning pages will work only if we do something to strengthen the artist. For a couple of hours every week, we take our artist out on a date, and let her play. This date need not be expensive, you can borrow your child's crayons and fill out a blank sheet / you can learn the lyrics of your favorite song and record them as your ring tone. No request by the inner child is to be put down as unreasonable.

The weekly meetings : Once this process is understood, all it needs is implementation. Instead of a facilitator, the group can do with a moderator. Manjushree Abhinav, an author and a film maker, who has been working on and off on the morning pages since the last few years, would like to regularize her own practice with the help of this group.

We plan to have a small group of ten people, who will meet once in a week for a couple of hours. The first meeting will happen at Raksha Bharadias (author) home, on 12th August, tuesday afternoon, from 4 pm to 6 pm. RSVP. Send a mail to manjushree.abhinav@gmail.com, with ur cell no, so that the address can be texted . Please come with a brand new full scape notebook and a pen.

Online Creative Writing Workshop from 29th June' 14

Four sessions.
Four hours/session. Four Sundays, 1:00 to 5:00 pm on Google Hangouts. Fees: Rs 4,600

Our workshop is from June 29 to July 20.  mail to join / enquire  manjushree.abhinav@gmail.com  or call +91 98254 76446.

Day 1
Break the writer’s block:  A seemingly light but deeply introspective exercise to get the creative juices flowing. Our personal themes and directions are mapped.

Day 2:
Structure of the story: Understanding the conflict-resolution structure from popular mythology and analysing how it travels into present day cinema and literature. Our own structures are formed.

Day 3:
Navrasas: To make our structures flow, we dip into the writers treasure box and base of all literature: the navrasas. The first draft of our story emerges.

Day 4:
The final touch: Fleshing out the stories , working with characters and dialogues, in the short story format or as a script outline. We also practice reading aloud effectively.

Community & conversations
Learn alongside people who are aspiring to develop their voices and sharpen their imagination. Converse over informal sessions or connect over our web interface.  Introspections are often smoothened out by group energies, thereby facilitating understanding. Friendships which emerge in this process often lead to long-term collaboration and support. These are as valuable for a young creative practitioner as talent and skill.

Creative sparks & fulfilment
Where do stories start? How do creative journeys begin? The life of the dream-merchant is not just to begin but to continue constantly with energy and passion. We help students with feedback and triggers that help you question yourself and move forward in your struggle.
Fulfilment is a natural by-product of creative practice. The subtle balance between self confidence and humility sweetens the fruit of the experience.

Discovery & nurturing
Who are you? Are you an amalgamation of your ancestors ? Or is there something else that dropped down from the stars when you were born? It is this ‘something else’ that we will look for. An inner discovery can be a powerful motivator to walk the path. And when a toddler takes her first steps, all she needs is a ‘proud to see her walk’ parent, rather than a critic who judges and compares her to a professional walker.

We have maximum nine seats in this batch, so register asap.Call +91 98254 76446 or mail manjushree.abhinav@gmail.com.

COMMENTS ABOUT RAJASHREE'S WORKSHOPS BY EX-STUDENTS:

"I had read quite a few books by Syd Field and Robert McKee but most of them had been written keeping in mind Hollywood  movies. After attending Rajashree's workshop I got to know that Bollywood is a different ball game altogether and what works in Hollywood might not necessarily work in Bollywood, or to make it work you need to add those extra spices (masala) to make it palatable for Indian Audience. If you need to know what works in Bollywood and Tellywood (I mean television) per se, the Bollywood Structure, the Rasas etc., then you must attend her workshop."         - Brijesh Bolar

"To me, Rajashree is like the energy drink Red Bull! She motivates you to spring into action and pushes you to deliver beyond your limits. Without her encouragement, I dont think I would have been able to transform my idea into a screenplay .....And with her encouragement came the right dose of constructive criticism......Also it was a great help to share and brainstorm ideas in the presence of other students and see where your idea stands....It is a relief to see so many people sailing in the same boat as you are and trying to get better and getting there.I was actually groping in the dark when Rajashree came as a ray of hope...."         - Priya Saraiya

"This programme gave me the mechanics of writing for features, along with the confidence. But what Rajashree really did was crack the whip, pushing us constantly to keep writing and keep exploring. The lively discussions were the best part of this programme."         - Satish Desa

"You can't open a door by pushing a wall, this is what I realised in the workshop. Rajashree will not only let you open your thoughts but also direct them to a proper way so that we push the door and not the wall."         - Amit Shukla
